Surfing in Tenerife
A quick look at the best surf spots in Tenerife:
The largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife has long been known as a paradise among surfers. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, which warms the water, and the Atlantic Ocean, bringing waves, you can surf here all year round. The weather on the islands is always consistently good (with rare exceptions), the water temperature ranges from 18-24 degrees Celsius.
But Tenerife is not only convenient for climatic conditions: the division into South and North helps you navigate the spots and choose the most suitable conditions for your level of board ownership. So, beginners are advised to start from the southern beaches, where the waves are softer and smoother, and more experienced surfers usually head to the northern spots, where the height and strength of the waves are an order of magnitude stronger.
In total, there are about 30 spots on the island. We recommend paying particular attention to the following.
Here are the most popular, accessible and visited spots on the south side, as a minus the dense load and the lack of fresh water showers. So, Derecha del Cartel, a comfortable right hand wave, at western directions brought together, more suitable for experienced surfers.
The most famous left wave of Tenerife, the spot is always crowded and usually difficult: for beginners it is better to try the El Medio spot, which is located between the two previous ones, chosen by novice surfers and schools for moderate waves and a safe flat reef. Under these conditions, surf instructors promise the beginner the first wave caught after 1.5 – 2 hours of training.
An extremely wild spot, even if its waves do not exceed a two-meter mark. Suitable only for professionals who are confident in their skills. It is famous for its very fast, and therefore dangerous, tubular waves, which are impossible to look at without admiration.
The southern spot, recommended only for professionals, is also one of the most popular among tourists and vacationers. Localism is pronounced here, which means that local surfers are not very welcoming to newcomers on their waves.
Soft, easy-to-learn waves attract beginners and those who are just trying to establish confidence in their own skills. It is optimal for southern directions, the spot is usually crowded.
The famous urban beach of Puerto de Lacruz, with natural, active waves. Suitable for both beginners and experienced surfers. Beautiful landscapes are a bonus to comfortable waves and a comfortable general surroundings.
Punta Blanca K16
Frighteningly powerful and easily closed into pipes waves, which only experienced experts can catch.
An atmospheric place that allows you to fully appreciate the beauty of man’s subjugation of nature.
At this spot, tourists and vacationers most often act as spectators – local surfers are very jealous of this corner.
Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo
Peaceful, calm place due to remoteness from the main tourist routes. Six excellent spots are concentrated in these two towns, impressive sea and mountain landscapes turn the process of skiing into an exciting journey. Suitable for those who have already mastered the first steps in the art of surfing. Best for moderate forecasts
Atmospheric, beautiful and dangerous spot northern spot, where usually only locals ride. High waves and turbulent currents require not only experience, but also remarkable physical strength. Ordinary tourists come here to see the spectacle. Fascinating!
Spot for beginners in surfing with rare exceptions. A variety of water activities are popular on the beach (kitesurfing, windsurfing, SUP surfing), but the perfect balance of windy, non-fastidious waves and sandy bottom is ideal for those who are just trying to get on a classic board. We sometimes practice the first lessons on this spot and then move on to reef lessons, we also conduct kitesurfing lessons of any level here, including the basics of waveriding.
We will be happy to help you organize an active holiday in Tenerife and share our experience in surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing.
