Progress does not stop when the waves do.

A flat day does not mean a lost day. Our instructors also help students improve through surfskate or eFOIL, Saturday yoga with Mari, and other ocean-based activities that build balance, mobility, recovery, and body control. Progress here never happens only in the water. And our Surf Café is right on site for after the session – coffee, food, and time to come down from the stoke. Are all Ocean Freaks instructors certified by international surfing federations?

Yes. Ocean Freaks World is an ISA-certified surf school, and our instructors hold internationally recognised qualifications with extensive teaching experience. Certification matters — not as a badge, but as a baseline that ensures every student receives structured, safe, and effective coaching from their very first session.

Beyond the paperwork, our coaches bring years of real water time. They have taught complete beginners, experienced surfers looking to improve, children as young as six, and athletes working on specific technique. That combination of formal qualification and lived experience is what makes the difference between a lesson and real progress.

Can I join the Ocean Freaks World community as a digital nomad or long-term resident?

Absolutely. Our doors are always open – to first-timers, regulars, and everyone who has chosen Las Américas as their base.

Some people started with us years ago and still come back every season. Some are here for months at a time. Some moved to Tenerife and found that Ocean Freaks became part of their daily rhythm — a place to surf, talk about surfing, eat well, and connect with people who share the same love for the ocean.

The café is always there for a good coffee and a conversation. The community is real. And for club members, we offer discounts across all our services – surf school, café, rental, shop, and the booking centre. How do you ensure the highest quality and safety of your rental equipment?

We use equipment from Ocean Earth — an Australian brand that sets the standard for surf gear quality and durability. Our fleet includes surfboards, wetsuits, surf shoes, lycras, and leashes, all selected for performance and safety at every level.

Beyond the brand, quality is maintained through discipline. We service our equipment regularly, perform timely repairs, and replace gear that no longer meets our standards – before it becomes a problem in the water. We would not put a student on a board we would not ride ourselves. That is the standard we hold ourselves to every day.

How long has Ocean Freaks World been part of the Tenerife surf community?

Our story began in 2008 with the opening of Q-Team Surf School on Isla Margarita, Venezuela – one of the Caribbean’s most vibrant surf destinations. That first school was where the Ocean Freaks philosophy took shape: local knowledge, genuine coaching, and a community built around the ocean.

In 2011, we opened our summer residence in Tenerife, bringing that same approach to the Atlantic. The connection with Las Américas was immediate – consistent waves, warm water, and a surf community that felt like home.

By 2015, we made it permanent. Our school and centre have operated full-time on Playa de las Américas ever since, growing season by season into what you see today: a full surf and ocean lifestyle hub, right on the beach.

What is the Ocean Freaks philosophy on ocean safety and environmental protection?

Our philosophy starts with respect – for the ocean, for the people in it, and for everything the ocean sustains. Surfing is one of the few sports that puts you directly inside a natural system. That creates a responsibility that goes beyond teaching technique.

In practice, this means we study the ocean’s energy rather than fight it. We teach students to read conditions, understand tides, and move with the water rather than against it. Safety is not a checklist – it is a mindset we build from the first session.

On the environmental side, we actively work to protect what we love. We participate in local clean-up initiatives, reduce single-use plastic at our café and school, and support awareness through every lesson we give. Surfing brings people into the ocean, and once you are in it, you cannot help but care about keeping it clean. That connection is something we cultivate deliberately with every student who walks through our door.

What other projects are you involved in in the Canary Islands?

Yes – community and sustainability are part of how we operate, not an afterthought.

We participate in municipal events and help organise local surf competitions. We support the local surf community and dedicate time to teaching children who might not otherwise have access to the ocean. We also actively participate in the development of Ocean Freaks Boats – a project focused on boat trips, expeditions across the Canary archipelago, and surf safaris that connect people with the wider ocean environment of the islands.

Beyond events, we work to reduce our environmental footprint day to day: cutting single-use plastic, sourcing high-quality local ingredients for the café, and using every lesson as an opportunity to build genuine relationships between our students and the ocean they are learning in.

Who are the people behind Ocean Freaks World, and what is their story?

Ocean Freaks World was built by surfers, for surfers. Our team brings together coaches from across the world – Spain, Venezuela, Russia, Germany, Ukraine, Georgia, and beyond – each carrying their own story from the water. Some started in the warm breaks of the Caribbean, others learned in the cold, unforgiving swells of the Baltic. What united them was the same thing that always unites surfers: the ocean.

Our head coaches include Andrés, a local born and raised on these waves. Daniel is detail-oriented and technically sharp. Juri, founder of Ocean Freaks World, is a lifetime rider across surf, kite, SUP, and foil. Deme, who reads people as well as he reads the ocean. Dimitrii, whose energy makes kids and families feel instantly at home: and Mari, surfer, yoga teacher, and the heart of our operations.
